Xiongjing – Bai Chancellor Li Shenkang announced on state media today that he will step down as secretary-general of the ruling Xingongrenhui, ahead of nationwide polls. Citing his age and health reasons, he stated he might not be able to lead his country’s government as Chancellor even if re-elected.

“Due to health and family matters, I shall step down as secretary-general of the Xingongrenhui. I will continue to serve out the remaining term of my Chancellorship until the Yihuiting’s dissolution. I’m glad to serve out my 40-over years of political and civil service, and as the chief advisor to our Emperor for 5 years. I shall step aside to allow someone fresher and younger with the eagerness to lead the party, to maintain the confidence and support of our people, and bring our country to greater prosperity and stability.”

The Chancellor added that he had tendered his resignation as secretary-general to party’s chairman Guang Shilin. In his letter of reply, Guang said he understood and respected his decision, and was thankful for his service to the party and the country.

“I thank you for your selfless decision to stand aside. Your actions are in the spirit of public service and a sense of duty, keeping in mind our country’s and people’s interests. Comrade Li is an exceptional leader, whose ideals and policies continue to shape our country’s future.”

A statement from the Xingongrenhui added that they would “need time” to select a new secretary-general who would lead the party in the upcoming elections set in June or July. The decision to accept his resignation had been made after “several long discussions” with senior members of the party. A party caucus to select the new secretary-general had been scheduled at the beginning of May.

Chancellor Li, who leads the conservative segment of the Xingongrenhui, previously served as Chancellor from 2014 to 2015 but stepped down owing to a power struggle within the Xingongrenhui. He served again from 2019, succeeding Cai Wenying, the leader of the pro-liberal segment who resigned over the failures of her liberal policies.
