Sea level rise worries Corem’s citizens

Corem is the second city of the country, which population amounts to 230 000 people, up to 300 000 if we consider the entire metro area. The city is located in the middle of a swamp that past tribes found useful as a natural protection. However, over time, the city started to grow more and more as colonisers found the position strategic to conquer and defend the Londu Peninsula.

With the climate change, the melting glaciers and the rise of the sea level, is making the floods in the swamp around overflow to the city, and this event is becoming more frequent. Such floods, averagely, happen around twice a year, but the trend is catastrophically increasing as in 2022 the flood count is at four.

“If the citizens are severely worried, the institutions seem to don’t give a f*ck”, this is what the leader of “Corem safe again” association said on the demonstration that took place today afternoon in the central square of the city. The association managed to get 5 800 signs for their petition in six days, and is continuing with the goal of 15 000 signs before forward the request to the local and national institutions.

The National Institute of Biology and Sealife warn that these floods are deteriorating the marine life of the swamp and the soil below the city, as always more water is penetrating into the terrain, making it more fragile and subject to sinkholes and even earthquakes.
