Quentinsburgh – A Freedemian Representative Nosh Quimby proposed a bill yesterday to shift the denominations of the Freedin banknotes from a system of 5s to a system of 4s with the goal of ensuring that every smaller bill could fit cleanly into any larger denomination.
Currently, the Freedin is broken into banknotes of FƉ1, FƉ5, FƉ10, FƉ25, FƉ50, and FƉ100. The FƉ1 banknote is scheduled to be replaced with an FƉ1 coin with a transition starting in 2023. Quimby’s proposal would move this to FƉ1, FƉ4, FƉ12, FƉ24, FƉ48, and FƉ96, with each banknote retaining the basic design of the number it closest replaced (the FƉ4 replacing FƉ5, FƉ12 replacing the FƉ10, etc).
“As it stands, there’s no way to cleanly fit FƉ10 banknotes into a FƉ25 banknote, throwing off the whole system. Similar systems that use a 20 instead of a 25 hit the same problem with the 50. But if we shift to a system of fours instead, everything fits perfectly. Three 4s make a 12, Two 12s make a 24. And the denominations don’t change much!”
The proposal was met mostly with scoffing and scepticism.
“Even if we ignore the fact that this is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist, I don’t see how this could work in reality without it having been the system from the beginning,” one representative from Frankelyn stated in an interview. “A mass transition to this system would cause chaos across the entire economy. How on earth would we transition every single denomination at the same time? This is insane! We’re not destroying our currency because your proposal “fits better”!”
A conservative Lawrence state representative accused Quimby on social media of being “a globalist trying to sabotage our good Freedemian freedin”.
“We have been forced to switch to the Tare and give up our monetary independence. Isn’t the Tare peg bad enough?” He added, referring to the regional currency of the Tarephian Corporation Council, of which Freedemia is a member.
A spokesperson from the Bank of Freedemia expressed “amusement” in the proposal, but said that any change in the banknote series “must be rational” and “fulfil essential economic needs”.
The proposal is expected to die in the Freedemian House of Equal Representation with very little support.
